  About FirstHand Studios

   In the spirit of our definition of "craft", what was once the "Lazy O" tack store, located at 1861 South Main Street (Highway 44) in Greensboro, Georgia, has been transformed into craft learning studios.

   FirstHand offers the opportunity for all ages to explore various craft disciplines such as wood, metal, jewelry, clay, fiber, and glass. Classes range from beginning to advanced.   The architecture, facilities, and site are also perceived as craft, and will at times be the focus of a craft learning experiences.

JEWELRY / Janice Lam
Orientation to Wire Jewelry
Intermediate Floral Design Knitting in the Round
 Begin to learn how to shape and texture wire. This workshop is the foundation for the wire classes that follow. Learn the safe way to use wire, the different properties of wire, and the tools for manipulating wire. Material fee:$15.00

 Create a special buffet centerpiece for holiday gatherings. Carol will discuss how to incorporate fruit into arrangements. Participants will also create a basic topiary and then discuss the variety of fun ways it can be decorated. All tools and floral material will be provided and participants will take home two lovely arrangements. Material fee: $75.00

 Those who can knit and purl comfortably are ready to knit in the round. The class project will be a hat. Participants learn how to knit in the round, decrease, and knit on double-pointed needles. Bring a size 8-16” circular needle, size 8 double pointed needles, and worsted weight yarn to the first class.

Wrapped Pendant Advanced Floral Design FELTING / Jennif Chandler Feather Light Felted Scarf
 Make an original wrapped pendant, learn how to measure around a cabochon or coin, how to accurately wrap it, manipulate the wire into specific shapes, to secure the stone or coin, and make a bail to attach the pendant to a neck chain. Prerequisite. Material fee: varies

 Learn how to do wedding flowers in this one-day workshop. Participants will review the basic method of wire and taping and move on to making corsages and boutonnieres. Carol will also demonstrate how to make a hand held bouquet and small nosegays. Material fee: $75.00

 Create a unique and amazingly soft felted scarf using silk fibers, silk paper and lustrous locks from Jennif’s own Blue faced Leicester sheep. The initial breakdown of a large wool batt will be demonstrated, then participants will design and wet felt, using the rolling technique, their own beautiful scarf. Bring an old towel for rolling. Material fee: $15.00

Arrow Bracelet SILK PAINTING / Margaret Agner Silk Painting Felted Magic Carpet
 In this class participants will make an arrow shaped bracelet with beads. Students will learn how to measure for accurate fit, how to manipulate the wire into specific shapes, add and secure beads, and make and attach a clasp to the bracelet to finish it. Prerequisite Material fee: varies

 Learn the fast, fluid and exciting techniques of fabric painting to apply to wall hangings, apparel, and a variety of other art applications. In this two day workshop participants will experiment with brush painting fiber reactive dyes on cotton and silk as well as using resists and thickened dyes. They will learn how to mix dye, apply it, make it permanent, remove resists, resulting in a washable, colorful fabric. Material fee: $15.00 for dyes, chemicals, fabric, and long scarf. Additional fabrics and scarves may be purchased from instructor.

 Make a highly textured magic carpet of batting and fleece from Jennif’s own flock of Bluefaced Leicester sheep. Participants will use the wet felting rolling technique to make a personal carpet, size about 14” x 14”. It’s not expected to fly; Jennif’s not responsible if it does! Participants should bring an old towel. Material fee: $15.00

Beginning Quilting
 Make a wave ring and complete your set of wire jewelry. Participants will learn to take a proper ring measurement, use a mandrel to shape the wire into the ring shape, manipulate the wire into specific designs and secure them in place. Prerequisite. Material fee: varies

 For those who want to learn to knit, this class will introduce participants to the basic skills of casting on, knit and purl stitches, and binding off. The class project will be a scarf. Bring to the first class: worsted weight yarn and size 8 knitting needles.
Mondays 2/25, 3/3, 3/10 10:00-12:00
 These classes cover the basics of quilt design, appliqué, piecing, quilting, and finishing techniques for the beginner or intermediate quilter. A portable sewing machine is recommended for some classes along with basic sewing supplies. Examples and images of techniques will be at every class. Show and tell is always welcome.

Elementary Floral Design
 
   This one day workshop is a beautiful way to spend the day for beginners who would like to learn the basics of floral design. Carol will discuss purchasing and handling of flowers, and cover the main points of design, color, texture and composition. Participants will also learn about basic setup, greening, and come away with two arrangements, for a centerpiece and a vase. Material fee: $75.00
